Dr. (Mrs) Sophina Ogonna Umeh was born to Mr and Mrs Ezeaka Ikebudu of Amihie Village, Amanasaa, Umuchu, Agaata L.G.A. Anambra State on 6th November, 1970. She was the 4th child of her parents in the family of six children.
Sophina attended the famous Ogbarimgba Primary School, Umuchu where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in the year 1980. She got her Senior Secondary Certificate (SSCE) from the prestigious Community Secondary School, Umuchu, as the best graduating student of the School and Aguata L.G.A. in 1988
She obtained her B.Tech (Biotechnology) from the Department of Production Technology of Unizik as the best graduating student in 1998. She obtained her M.Tech (Biotechnology) from the same Department in 2001 making her the First M.Sc. Graduate of Biotechnology in Nigeria. She had her Ph.D in Industrial Microbiology with area of specialization in Food and Industrial Microbiology.
Sophina got married to Mr Aloysius Umeh of Enugu-umuonyia in Orumba L.G.A. of Anambra State and the marriage is blessed with four (4) children.Interest Includes: Having specialized in Food and Industrial Microbiology, research interest is in that aspect with focus on the following topics;
• Optimization of food production processes
• Preservation of processed foods
• Spoilage control of harvested and stored food products (Post harvest spoilage control)
• Probiotics and Prebiotics isolation, characterization and preservation
• Beverages and wine production and other aspects of research that will enhance availability and affordability of food products in local markets
Waiting for the TET Fund reply on the approved proposal submitted in 2017/2018 to carry out the Isolation, characterization and preservation of Baker’s and brewer’s yeasts from fermented local beverages.
