BIOGRAPHY OF PROFESSOR JOEL IZUCHUKWU IGBOKWE

Prof. Joel Izuchukwu Igbokwe was born on 29th March, 1956 in Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. He had his secondary education at Okongwu Memorial Grammar School, Nnewi, College of Immaculate Conception, Enugu and Osadebay High School Asaba, all in Nigeria. He holds a M.Sc degree in Surveying from Sofia Bulgaria (University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Sofia 1983) and a Ph.D in Surveying (Remote Sensing) from the University of Hannover (Leibniz University, Hannover), Federal Republic of Germany in1993. He has been a Lecturer in Nnamdi Azikiwe University since 1985 and a Professor of Surveying and Geoinformatics since 2001. Prof. Igbokwe’s area of teaching and research is Surveying, Digital Mapping, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems Applications (Spatial Information Science). He has over 100 research publications to his credit, including textbooks, journal articles, conference proceedings, etc. He has also successfully trained, supervised and graduated over 40 M.Sc and 15 Ph.D candidates in his area of teaching and research. In Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, he has held numerous administrative positions, including Head of Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences as well as Member of the University Governing Council. He has been a permanent member of the University Senate since 2001.
Professor Igbokwe has attracted notable research grants for research studies in the University. He is a member of many professional bodies, including Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Fellow of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, Member of the International Society for Digital Earth, Member of the Geoinformation Society of Nigeria, Member of Nigerian Institute of Management, etc
